Drake Premieres 'Miss Me' Video, Phones Fans on Ustream

Aug 20, 2010 -- 5:40pm

After giving his fans a chance to watch the premiere of the "Miss Me" music video, Drake reached out to his fans -- literally -- during a Ustream webcast from his Toronto apartment Thursday night (Aug. 19). The rapper used the webcasting service for an hour to announce the title of his forthcoming R&B mixtape and a "Welcome Home Weezy" concert, show off his Toronto apartment and dial a handful of lucky fans on his Blackberry.

Drake struggled to launch the Ustream for nearly half an hour, but he was ready to answer fan questions once overcoming the technical difficulties. "Ustream is like the new press conference," he said. "I put this [black hoodie] on and sprayed cologne as if you can smell it. It's really as if we're meeting in perso

After answering questions about his mom ("I love her... I might see her tonight") and the pressures he feels as an artist ("Every night I go to sleep, it's like, 'I gotta get better'... I gotta come back with an album that's way better than 'Thank Me Later,' that's way better than 'So Far Gone'"), Drizzy said that his free R&B mixtape will be called "It's Never Enough," and that there is no release date but it will come out "soon." He also said that he is working on his second album and hopes to have it out next year.

As for his incarcerated mentor Lil' Wayne, Drake announced that a "Welcome Home Weezy" concert is set for Nov. 5, but couldn't say where it would be. "You might as well just camp out at all different locations," Drake said. "That's gonna be crazy, the real deal."

Drake also talked about the video for "Miss Me," which premiered last night at 8 PM EST on MTV immediately before the Ustream. The stylish clip features performance scenes in which the rapper stares up at a woman seductively dancing toward him, while Lil' Wayne delivers his guest verse in silhouette form. Drizzy told his Ustream audience that a video for "Thank Me Later" track "Fancy" was due out in a few weeks as well.

The rapper later gave a tour of his apartment, showing off his new chandelier and dimly lit patio. He also flipped through nearly every page of "The Big Butt Book," a picture book of "big booties" that is a fixture on his coffee table, while sipping a glass of Pinot Grigio.

However, the highlight of the Ustream came when Drake asked his watchers to send in their phone numbers and promptly dialed a half-dozen fans. One young girl breathlessly offered to drive the rapper to his upcoming concert in Miami, while a New Jersey fan introduced Drake to her brother, a 10-year-old aspiring rapper.

"You gonna be a rapper? I hope you're ready, man!" Drake told the boy. "You gotta study, you gotta be smart to be a rapper. You gotta work hard to be a rapper, you gotta keep the words flowing. You gotta finish that school up, and you could just change the world being a rapper, so I hope you're coming out here talking about positive things, man."

Before he signed off, Drake explained that he was using the Ustream to stay connected to his fans and give them a chance to see him as a normal person. "Just know, look me in my eye, you haven't lost me yet," the rapper said. "I know sometimes they try to drive a wedge between the artist and the listener, or sometimes wealth and success drives a wedge between me and you... I'm still here for you. I still want to do this mixtape shit, I still want to rap my heart out, I still want to represent the youth and tell you about my life, and hopefully touch on some subjects that's going on in your life. I just wanted to let you know, you haven't lost me to this game yet, and I don't think you ever will."

Drake's Ustream stint follows Kanye West's live webcasting debut earlier this month. Like West, Drizzy is set to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12.

Eminem Aiming For a No. 1 Return

Aug 15, 2010 -- 7:02pm

While Arcade Fire celebrated its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 past this past week with the arrival of "The Suburbs," it's looking like a familiar face will return to the top slot next week: Eminem.

His "Recovery" set will probably skip back to No. 1 as "The Suburbs" is likely take a steep sales slide in its second week and none of this past Tuesday's new releases are aiming to challenge for the top slot.

Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift Sweep in with New No. 1s

"Recovery" will probably sell around 135,000 to 150,000 by week's end on Sunday, Aug. 15 -- a sales figure that will likely outpace the rest of the chart field.

Industry prognosticators are suggesting that the tally's biggest debut will come from either Disney Channel's soundtrack to "Camp Rock 2: the Final Jam" or perhaps Black Label Society's "Order of the Black." Each title could sell around 40,000 if all sales forecasts hold steady through the week.

Mike Posner's debut album "31 Minutes to Takeoff" and Blake Shelton's new EP "All About Tonight" are also maybe headed for a top 10 debut, as both are aiming for a start in the range of 30,000.

Cali Swag District Spreads 'Dougie' Fever

Jul 18, 2010 -- 8:35pm

If Cali Swag District has its way, everyone across the country will be doing the dougie. That's the name of the dance movement that the Inglewood, Calif., rap group has fashioned into an infectious first single -- and first hit -- on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Moving 10-9 this week on the chart, "Teach Me How to Dougie" also climbs 9-6 on Hot Rap Songs and graduates after two weeks at No. 1 on Heatseekers Songs to No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. Up 13% from last week with 30,000 in sales, the song has sold 184,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and rises 62-48 on Hot Digital Songs.

"This time last year, we weren't on any charts," says Yung, who with fellow rappers Smoove Da General, JayAre and dancer M-Bone comprise Cali Swag District. "This is a dream come true."

Initially introduced to the dougie by a friend attending Texas Southern University, the group members decided to put their own energetic West Coast twist on the dance, directing followers to "put your arms out front and lean side to side." Since then, Cali Swag District's YouTube video has garnered more than 1.5 million views. The 19-year-old alumni of Inglewood's Morningside High School have also performed on a series of school tours; at rhythmic KPWR Los Angeles' Power House Concert with headliners Snoop Dogg, Drake and Trey Songz; on Fuel TV's "Daily Habit"; and on the 2010 BET Awards preshow.

Up next is Cali Swag District's debut album, "The Kickback." It's set to drop Sept. 14 on Checkmate Records/Capitol. In-house Checkmate producers including rapper Poly Rob, Jay Hustle and GX are supplying tracks for the album, which will release a second single in the coming weeks.

The group's members are aware of the one-hit-wonder stigma that has categorized other rap/dance acts in the last several years. "We have other tracks you can dance to," Smoove Da General says, "but we also have many different styles . . . We're pretty sure we won't be one-hit wonders."

Eminem's 'Recovery' On Pace For 700K First Week!!

Jun 25, 2010 -- 5:18pm

Things just got better for Eminem.

Industry sources predicted Wednesday that Em's new "Recovery" album, released on June 21, was on track to easily debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with perhaps 600,000 copies sold by week's end on Sunday, June 27. Sources now estimate "Recovery" will rack up the biggest sales week for a single album in more than 18 months, as it should sell in excess of 700,000 by week's end on Sunday, June 27.

Thus, it may earn the best sales week for an album since - wait for it - October 2008. That's when AC/DC's "Black Ice" debuted with 784,000 in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. (Eminem will also blow past 2009's best sales week, when Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" started with 701,000 last November.)

"Recovery" is on track to be Eminem's sixth straight No. 1 debut - and sixth overall No. 1. His only album to miss the top spot was his "Slim Shady LP" debut, which bowed and peaked at No. 2 in 1999.

Last week's No. 1, Drake's "Thank Me Later," will likely slip to No. 2 on next week's Billboard 200 chart with perhaps 180,000 to 200,000 copies sold in its second week, while Miley Cyrus' new "Can't Be Tamed" might debut at No. 3 with around 120,000 to 130,000.

Next week's album charts competes with the same week in 2009 when in the wake of Michael Jackson's death, the King of Pop ruled with the top three selling albums in the U.S. as "Number Ones," "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" ranked at Nos. 1-3 with 108,000; 102,000 and 101,000; respectively.

Chuck D Takes Aim at Arizona; Public Enemy In the Studio!!! YEAH BOI!!!

Jun 18, 2010 -- 4:39pm

Public Enemy's Chuck D has Arizona in his crosshairs - again.

Nearly 20 years after Public Enemy's very public feud with Arizona over the state's lack of recognition for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday -- as documented in single "By the Time I Get to Arizona" -- frontman Chuck D has released a new track about it, "Tear Down That Wall."

"Yeah, because the governor is a Hitler," Chuck D tells Billboard.com. "Things do change from time to time but it goes right back into just proving that it wants to be something else. 'Tear Down That Wall' is something that has its own life. It's not that you're doing anything to be opportunistic. I talked about the wall not only just dividing the U.S. and Mexico but the states of California, New Mexico and Texas. But Arizona, it's like, come on. Now they're going to enforce a law that talks about basically racial profiling." "Tear Down That Wall" is now available at slamjamz.com and will appear on his solo CD to be released at a later date.

Public Enemy may be releasing its CD/DVD box set "Bring The Noise Hits, Vids and Docs 3" this summer, which documents the rap outfit's past dozen post-Def Jam years; however, all eyes are on the Big Apple act's next studio project due out in 2011.

"We have investors for the record all over the world and one thing that separates us from doing our own record in our own studios is each song will be a collaboration," Chuck D says. "So the people who call themselves fans and want something different from the group will be getting collaborations."

The project is already getting attention for its guest performances (Tom Morello, Rise Against and Z-Trip), as well as how it's being funded. Using SellaBand.com, Public Enemy is employing a fan-funding method for the recording process with a target of $75,000. So far the group raised over three-quarters of its goal. So what happens if you invest?

"It gets you the album, some swag and a percent of that 33 percent of the retail part of the album," Chuck D says. "We have limits. There's not going to be anymore than $75,000. So that'll be for the making and promotion of the record."

Furthermore, Chuck D has high hopes his own label SlamJamz will break barriers within the music industry.

"Mainstream media just seems to only want to talk about mainstream record companies when it comes to hip-hop," Chuck D says. "That's just crazy. It's like Universal, Warner Bros., Sony. That's what radio will play. Radio doesn't really dig into what is independently released and that's absolutely nuts. At least in the rock world they understand some greatness may come from independence. I'd like to get to that with rap and hip-hop. So that remains a problem with me."

Where is the Kast in OutKast for Big Boi's New Album?

Jun 09, 2010 -- 1:14am

Big Boi told GQ exactly why you won't hear his OutKast partner Andre 3000 on his soon-to-be-released "Sir Luscious Left Foot" album. "Jive Records told me my album is a piece of art, and they didn't know what to do with it," he said. "So I moved it over to Def Jam. And now Jive is trying to block Dré from being on my record. We can't be on songs together now."
